If you are unsure of the size ball mill you may need, but you know the quantity of product you would like to process in each batch, then there are a couple of things you need to know.

First, ball mills are understood by the total volume in the cylinder when it is empty; This volume is based on the ball mill's diameter and the cylinder's length from the inside (refer to the Chart below for sizing). As a rule of thumb, 25% of the total volume of the ball mill is considered the "working" part of the ball mill.

Next, know that proper filling of the ball mill proportionately between the grinding media and the product depends on whether your process is wet or dry.

Dry process example:

  • 200-gallon mill
  • 100-gallon grinding media
  • 50-gallon product
  • 50 gallons of working space

Wet grinding is a little bit different and varies tremendously based on the viscosity of the liquid, the ability of the solids to coagulate in the solution, the number of solids in the liquid, the introduction of wetting agents to disperse the solids, and whether or not the solids are organic versus non-organic.

Typically, the product fill line for wet milling is between 25% and 65% of the ball mill's total volume, but this is just a generality for argument's sake.

ECONOMY BALL MILLS

Our standard design Mills use tapered roller bearings mounted on machine turned trunnions, assuring long life and smooth operation. Mill Stands are of fabricated steel allowing for the discharge clearance required by the customer.

Economy Ball Mills are powered by high start torque motors and, depending on customer preference and design requirements, a direct connect shaft mounted speed reducer or a concentric shaft reducer with a gear and pinion is used to complete the drive train.

Motor Mounted Air Brakes are used when required, for stopping and positioning the mill for charging and discharging. Air Brakes allow for soft stopping, thus reducing shock loading on the drive train.

Stainless Steel Ball Mills

Stainless Steel balls are typically used in scenarios where breakdown of carbon steel balls is considered a contaminant. The precious metals industry such as tungsten alloys is very particular when it comes to "cross contamination" of carbon. So much so that they count it in parts per million (PPM).
Stainless steel balls are also used in food grade and pharmaceutical applications that regulatory entities such as the FDA or USDA may be involved in. In other words, anytime you are looking for a pure product, especially in dry milling applications, then stainless steel is the preferred grinding media of choice. This prevents any contamination of the product you are reducing the size of.

Unlined Steel Ball Mills

Fabricated of AR 400 Abrasion resistant Steel, generally furnished with welded or bolted Lifter Bars.

Alumina Lined Ball Mills

A steel cylinder lined with 2” thick high density alumina tongue & groove brick using standard Portland cement or epoxy mortar for special applications.

Rubber Lined Ball Mills

A steel cylinder lined with Abrasion Resistant Natural Rubber.

BALL MILL OPTIONS

We have the right ball mill for your needs

Jacketed Mill Cylinders

Jackets are provided with equally spaced baffles for positive circulation and to eliminate short-circuiting of heating or cooling medium. Jackets are furnished complete with rotary unions.

Dry Grinding

Requires a stationary Discharge Housing. Our Full Discharge Housing encloses the entire Mill Cylinder- sealing at the Mill Trunnions; our Narrow Discharge Housing seals against machined bars welded to the Mill Cylinder, using spring loaded seals around the circumference of the Mill.

Drive Trains for Smaller Horsepower Equipment

Drive Trains for Larger Horsepower Equipment

Requirements: Gear and pinion drive

Mill Linings: High Density Alumina Tongue & Groove Brick Lining

Mill Linings: Alumina Brick

These linings are installed with the aim of achieving two specific objectives: controlling carbon contamination and ensuring the importance of color in the final product.

Mill Linings: Natural Rubber

Lifter Bars: Provided in unlined steel, ceramic or rubber linings

Provided in unlined steel, ceramic or rubber linings.

Motor Mounted Air Brakes

Provided for positioning & holding the mill cylinder with minimum shock loading to the drive train with an adjustable ‘soft start’.

Replacement Builds

When issues arise with the ball mill cylinder, our tailored solution comes to the rescue. Using original drawings, we offer a replacement cylinder that seamlessly fits into your existing stands and infrastructure. Check out the photos to see the precision in action!
